Brief Introduction for Production Cost of PCB Board

  Many PCB new purchasers may don’t know clear about the PCB price components. This article will introduce briefly about the basic component of PCB cost. Also the cost may be different for the same specification and material from different manufacturers. Many factors will influence the final cost of PCB board. Here we will discuss some basic part.
  1. Base material
1) Base material type.FR-4 is our most commonly used for single sided board, double sided PCB and multi-layer PCB. The cost depends on the thickness of board and copper foil. While the CEM-3, FR1, CEM-1, FR2…are frequently used in single layer board. The cost usually will be cheaper than FR4.
2) Base material thickness. Common thickness 0.4mm,0.6mm,0.8mm,1.0mm,1.2mm,1.5mm,1.6mm,2.0mm,2.4mm,3.0mm,3.4mm. Too thin or too thick is not applied frequently, the cost will be higher than standard.
3) Copper foil thickness. Frequent requirement is18um (0.5oz), 35um (1oz), 70 (2 oz), 105um (3oz), 140um (4oz) and so on. Usually, the thicker copper, the higher circuit boards cost.
4) Base material supplier. Widely used manufacturers are Shengyi\KB\Gouji\ITEQ and so on. The cost differs from manufacturers. Sometimes the cost difference should be not big for the same frequently used brand.
5) Special requirement such as high Tg, halogen free,  Aluminum Base, High frequency
  2. Manufacture procedure
1) PCB line width and space smaller than such as 4/4mm, the price will be counted extra.
2) The board with BGA, the cost will rise. Some PCB manufacturers add the cost by quantity of BGA.
3) Surface finishing. The most frequently used is Hot Air Level (HASL), OSP (RoHs green board), Immersion tin, Immersion silver, Immersion gold etc. Different surface finishing will with different cost.
4) Technology/inspection standards. IPC 2 standard, IPC 3 standard, enterprise standard, military standard, the higher standard, the higher cost.
 3. Another is the shape of the PCB. Usually use CNC in milling the PCB profile. But if the shape is complex, need to make by mould. There will be mould cost.
To summarize the above, the basic factors to affect the price of Circuit board as follows:
1.PCB size
2.PCB layers
3.Surface treatment (Immersion gold,Lead free HAL, OSP ...)
4.Quantity
5.PCB material (normal FR4, Rogers, PTFE ...)

Also there are other factors will cause cost arise:
1. Small conductor line width and space
2.Too many holes/vias quantity
3 .Small apertures
4. Mould needed
5. Tight tolerances
6. Small circuit board thickness aperture ratio
7.Special requirements (board thickness too thin or too thick, copper plating, package...)

Advantages and disadvantages of different PCB surface treatment

  There are many types of Surface treatment for PCB board production. Usually PCB engineer will consider according to the board's performance and needs. Following is some reference from the advantages and disadvantages PCB under various surface treatments.

http://agipcb.com/pro.asp?bid=174&id=180

1.     HASL/ HAL Hot Air Leveling surface treatment
HASL surface treatment is a common finishing. It is divided into HASL and Lead-free HASL.
Advantages:
-> Longer storage time
-> The copper surface is completely covered with tin after PCB completed (completely covered before soldering tin)
-> Suitable for lead-free soldering
-> Process maturity
-> Low cost
-> Suitable for visual inspection and electrical testing
Disadvantages:
-> Not suitable for wire binding; Due to problems of surface roughness , there is some limit in the SMT, unsuitable for contact switch designs
-> Copper will dissolve in the HASL process, and the PCB board suffers high temperature
-> With limit for some particularly thick or thin circuit board, it is inconvenient for production operations

  2. OSP (Organic Solderability Preservative)
Advantages:
-> Process is simple; the surface is very smooth; suitable for lead-free soldering and SMT
-> Easy to rework; production operation is simple; suitable for horizontal operations
-> Suitable for a variety of treatment coexist on the board (eg. OSP + ENIG)
-> Low cost, environment-friendly
Disadvantages:
-> Reflow times limit (the film would be destroyed if it is multiple weld/soldering, usually no more than two times will be ok)
-> Not suitable for crimping technology, wire binding
-> Not inconvenient for visual inspection and electrical testing
-> N2 gas protection needed when SMT
-> Unsuitable for SMT rework
-> Good Storage conditions demand

  3.     Chemical Silver
Chemical Silver is good surface treatment processes.
Advantages:
-> Process is simple, suitable for lead-free soldering
-> Surface is very smooth
-> Suitable for fine line
-> Low cost
Disadvantages:
-> High requirement on storage conditions
-> Easy with problem in welding strength (micro-hole blank problem).
-> Prone to with electro migration as well as galvanic corrosion phenomenon bite under copper and solder mask
-> Electrical measurement is also an issue

4. Immersion Tin
Immersion tin is copper-tin chemical substitution reactions.
Advantages:
-> Suitable for line production
-> Suitable for fine line processing, suitable for lead-free soldering, especially for crimp technology
-> Good flatness, suitable for SMT
Disadvantages:
-> Good storage conditions required. The storage period is better no more than six months, avoid tin whisker grow
-> Not suitable for touch switch design
-> The production process of the solder mask process requires relatively high, otherwise it will lead to solder mask off
-> When multiple welding, it is better protected by N2 gas
-> Difficult with Electrical testing

 5. Chemical nickel-gold (ENIG)
Immersion Gold is a widely used surface finishing .Please note that the nickel layer is a nickel-phosphorus alloy layer. Based on phosphorus content, it is divided into high phosphorous nickel and nickel-phosphorus. Their applications are not the same. We won’t discuss about their difference here.
Advantages:
-> Suitable for lead-free soldering
-> Surface is smooth, suitable for SMT
-> Through holes also can be immersed Gold
-> Long storage time. Not strict storage conditions
-> Suitable for electrical testing
-> Suitable switch contact design
-> Suitable for aluminum wire binding and thick board; strong resistance to environmental attack

Disadvantages:
->Cost high
->Black block
->Use cyanide and other hazardous chemicals

6. Plating Gold
Plating gold is divided into "hard gold" and "soft gold". Hard gold (for example gold-cobalt alloy) is common used in Gold finger (contact connector) design. Soft gold is pure gold. Gold plating is frequently used in IC substrate (such as PBGA).It suitable for gold bonding and copper bonding. But for COB contains IC plating, the Gold finger needs to do conductive wire out additionally for plating.

Advantages:
-> Long storage time> 12 months
-> Suitable for contact switch design and gold wire bonding.
-> Suitable for electrical testing
Disadvantages:
-> Higher cost due to relatively thick gold
-> Need to design additional conductive line for electroplating finger
-> Because of different gold thickness, it is possible cause embrittlement problem which may influence the strength
-> Problem of plating surface uniformity
-> No nickel gold plated wrap wire side
-> Not suitable for aluminum wire bonding.

7. Nickel-Palladium (ENEPIG)
Nickel Palladium now start to be used in PCB field, which usually is used semiconductor applications before.
Advantages:
-> In the IC board application, suitable for binding gold, aluminum bonding, suitable for lead-free soldering.
-> Compared with ENIG, no corrosion of nickel (black plate) problem,costs cheaper than ENIG electroless nickel and gold.
-> Long storage time.
-> Suitable for a variety of surface treatment processes
Disadvantages :
-> Process complex, difficult to control.
-> PCB field application history is short

Aluminum base board PCB ABC

What is the aluminum base board PCB?

Aluminum base pcb is an unique metal-based CCL, aluminum PCB is with good thermal conductivity, electrical insulation and mechanical processing performance.

Characters of aluminum base PCB:
● Aluminum base PCB surface with a mount technology (SMT)
● Aluminum base PCB has good heat dissipation in the circuit design
● Aluminum core pcb can reduce the temperature, increase power density and reliability, extend product life
●Aluminum board PCB can reduce size, lower hardware and assembly costs
●Aluminum substrate PCB can replace ceramic substrates board, to obtain better mechanical endurance.

PCB aluminum structure

Aluminum PCB copper clad is a metal circuit board materials, composed with copper foil, insulation layer and the metal substrate, its structure is divided into three layers:
Circuit layer: same with general PCB CCL, copper foil thickness could be 1oz to 10oz.
Insulation: insulation layer is a layer materials with low thermal resistance, thickness from 0.003 "to 0.006”, is the key technology of aluminum core board, has received UL certification.
Base layer: is metal substrate, usually aluminum or copper. Aluminum circuit boards and traditional FR4 laminated sheet

PCB aluminum board consist of circuit layer, insulation layer and metal core .Circuit layers (copper foil CCL) is usually formed after printed circuit etching, which make each components connected. In general, the circuit layer requires a great currency loading ability, that needs thicker foil, usually 35μm ~ 280μm.
Insulation layer is the core point of PCB aluminum board. It is usually filled by a special ceramic special polymer, with feature of thermal resistance, excellent viscoelastic properties, heat resistant and aging-resistant, could withstand mechanical and thermal stresses.  Insulation layer of IMS-H01, IMS-H02, LED-0601 and other high-performance aluminum plate PCB use such technology, which enable it with an extremely excellent thermal properties and high electrical insulation strength.
Metal substrate is the support part of aluminum board, which requires a high thermal conductivity. Usually use aluminum core, sometimes also copper core (copper core pcb can provide better thermal conductivity), suitable for drilling, punching, cutting and other conventional machining. Compared with other PCB material, it has its own advantages, suitable to SMT surface mount assembly process, no radiator, much smaller, excellent heat dissipation, good insulation properties and mechanical performance.
